چکیده

We report on ROSAT HRI observations of the z = 0.61 radio galaxy 3C 220.1. The X-ray emission from this object consists of an extended component, which we attribute to luminous cluster emission, and a compact central source. The compact component is too bright to be modelled as a cooling flow under some plausible assumptions for the hot gas temperature and distribution; we suggest instead that it is directly related to the core of the radio source. The X-ray flux of the compact component is consistent with the prediction of Worrall et al. (1994) that all powerful radio galaxies should have a central jet-related X-ray emission component that is proportional in strength to the radio core flux density. Other observations of distant 3CR radio sources are consistent with this model. Subject headings: X-rays: galaxies — galaxies: active — galaxies: individual (3C 220.1)

Extended and Compact X-ray Emission in Powerful Radio Galaxies

We report ROSAT X-ray observations of two powerful radio galaxies. 3C 280 provides evidence for a mixture of unresolved and extended emission, with the latter produced by hot plasma of insufficient pressure to confine the radio lobes and insufficient density for a cooling flow to have begun. 3C 220.3 gives only an X-ray upper limit, but one consistent with our interpretation of the X-ray emissi...

Magnetic field strengths in the hotspots and lobes of three powerful FRII radio sources

We have made deep Chandra observations of three powerful FRII radio sources: two quasars (3C 263 and 3C 351) and one radio galaxy (3C 330). X-ray emission from hotspots and lobes, as well as from the active nucleus, is detected in each source. We model the hotspots' synchrotron spectra using VLA, BIMA and Hubble Space Telescope data. In 3C 263 and 3C 330, the hotspots' X-ray emission is at a le...

Magnetic Field Strengths in the Hot Spots and Lobes of Three Powerful Fanaroff-riley Type Ii Radio Sources

We have made deep Chandra observations of three powerful Fanaroff-Riley type II (FR II) radio sources: two quasars (3C 263 and 3C 351) and one radio galaxy (3C 330). X-ray emission from hot spots and lobes, as well as from the active nucleus, is detected in each source. We model the hot spots’ synchrotron spectra using VLA, BIMA, and Hubble Space Telescope data. In 3C 263 and 3C 330, the hot sp...

Chandra measurements of 3 C 220 . 1 ’ s X - ray core and cluster

We report results of an 18 ks exposure with the ACIS instrument on Chandra of the powerful z = 0.62 radio galaxy 3C 220.1. The X-ray emission separates into cluster gas of emission-weighted kT ∼ 5 keV and 0.7-12 keV luminosity (to a radius of 45 arcsec) 5.6 × 10 44 ergs s −1 , and unresolved emission (coincident with the radio core). While the extended X-ray emission is clearly thermal in natur...

Anisotropic inverse Compton scattering in powerful radio galaxies : the case of 3 C 295

Inverse Compton (IC) scattering of nuclear photons with relativistic electrons in the lobes of powerful radio galaxies and quasars can give detectable extended X–ray emission from the radio lobes if relativistic electrons with a Lorentz factor γ < 300 are present (Brunetti, Setti, Comastri 1997). In general these electrons are not detected since they emit synchrotron radiation at frequencies be...
